Powder Puff Pilot ANR Headset Operating Instructions

Introduction

This Active Noise Reduction (ANR) headset (Product HNPPA) is a battery-powered,
auto-shutoff headset. Since the ANR function is battery-powered by a 9V battery (not
the aircraft or intercom), the battery must be installed and the headset must be
connected to a working intercom or aircraft for the ANR to operate. The noise
attenuation effect of ANR reduces noise by 20 decibels. When the ANR function is not
operable (no battery power or not plugged in), the headset still works, but the ANR
function reverts to Passive Noise Reduction (PNR).

The mono-stereo switch on the battery module (Figure 1) toggles between stereo and
mono settings. It is not an on/off switch. If your aircraft intercom is mono, set this
switch to the mono position. If this switch is set to stereo and your aircraft is in mono
mode, only the right earcup of your ANR headset functions.

The microphone plug functions like an on/off switch for your ANR headset. The battery
shuts off automatically whenever the plugs are pulled out of the intercom or airplane
jack. When the ANR function is working, the green annunciator on the battery module
flickers.

When battery power is low (less than 1 hour available), the low battery voltage
indicator—a red LED annunciator—flashes. When illuminated, the headset continues to
operate normally. After 1 hour, the ANR function ceases to operate, and the headset
performs as a PNR model.

 

Operating Instructions

To insert the battery:
1. Hold down the back-end lip chip of the battery module and then pull to open the
battery compartment (Figure 2, A).
2. Insert a 9V battery into the battery compartment, positioning it according to
positive (+) and negative (-) symbols.

3. Adjust the lip and press its back-end, pushing until it clicks into place(Figure 2, B).
To operate your ANR headset:
1. Rotate the flexible microphone boom to transmit from the right or left.
2. Before plugging into the intercom or aircraft, rotate the headset volume control
(on the side of the headset opposite the microphone boom) fully counterclockwise to the minimum position.
3. Rest the headband securely on the top of your head, with the earseals centered
over your ears.

4. For best noise cancellation, position the microphone no more than ¼ inch
(6 mm) from your lips.
5. Insert the microphone plug (PJ068) earphone plug (PJ055) into their respective
aircraft or intercom jack.
6. Rotate the headset volume knob clockwise to a comfortable level.
7. Set the mono/stereo switch on the battery module to mono or stereo.

Troubleshooting

If your ANR headset does not work properly, check that:
• A 9V battery is properly inserted into the battery module. The ANR function is
powered only by the battery, not by the aircraft or intercom.
• The intercom or aircraft power is operating. If not, the ANR headset performs like
a Passive Noise Reduction (PNR) model.
• The microphone plug is securely inserted into the jack. If not, the ANR headset
performs like a Passive Noise Reduction (PNR) model.
• The mono/stereo switch on the battery module is set to mono and your aircraft is
in mono mode. If not, you’ll hear only from one side.

Cautions

Proper fit is critical to the ANR model’s noise attenuation effectiveness.

To ensure proper fit of your ANR headset:

• Push the headband down until it rests comfortably on the top of your head.

• Move the earcups slightly up or down or from side to side until you achieve
maximum attenuation.
• Since eyeglasses reduce attenuation, wear eyeglasses with thin temples to minimize
noise leakage.

To keep your headset working properly:
• Never alter your headset.
• If you see a defect such as splits in cups, seek immediate replacement.

To clean your headset:
• Do not immerse in water.
• Clean regularly with mild soapy water. Sponge off the headpad and earseals, taking
care to rinse thoroughly.
